Mild steel contains iron and carbon as the primary elements; it contains other elements in a small quantity such as nickel, chromium, Sulphur, silicon, etc. But it is the carbon content that defines it as mild steel.
Stainless steel is also known as Inox steel or Inox; there are more than 150 grades of stainless steel available in the market, from which 15 are most commonly used. Stainless steel contains iron and chromium as significant elements. It also contains other elements in small quantities such as carbon, nickel, copper, silicon, nitrogen, manganese, molybdenum, etc.
But it is the chromium content that defines it as stainless steel.
The corrosion resistance of the benches
Mild steel benches are not resistant to corrosion. They rust easily and rapidly; the iron present in the mild steel benches reacts with the moisture present in the air to produce iron oxide. This iron oxide is also known as rust.
Therefore, mild steel benches require further processing, such as galvanising, to give them a protective surface.

Stainless steel benches do not rust or corrode quickly; the purpose of mixing chromium is to prevent the iron from oxidising. Oxidising avoids the rusting of the stainless steel benches, and the benches acquire the corrosion resistance property.
The chromium present in the stainless steel benches reacts with the oxygen present in the air. It produces chromium oxide (A protective skin on the surface of the stainless steel benches), which prevents iron from oxidation.
As long as this layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the stainless steel benches is undamaged, the stainless steel benches will remain naturally rust and corrosion-resistant.

Appearance-wise mild steel benches are not that attractive compared to stainless steel benches. Unlike mild steel benches, stainless steel benches have a white–silver shiny appearance which looks very attractive.
